Biographical Notes:

Emily Burke is an experienced Arbitrator in both the private and public sectors. She has provided arbitration and dispute resolution services in the labour and employment areas for many years. Ms Burke has dealt with a wide variety of issues including collective agreement interpretation, discipine & discharge and developing issues such as accommodation in the workplace. Prior to this Ms Burke was a Vice-Chair of the BC Labour Relations Board for close to 9 years. As a Vice-Chair , she was responsible for adjudicating a broad range of applications arising under the applicable legislation. Previously, Ms. Burke practised labour and employment law with the firm of Alexander, Holburn, Beaudin and Lang. She served as a staff lawyer of the Labour Relations Board from 1984 to 1986, during which time she coordinated and edited the Canadian Labour Relations Board Reports.

Ms Burke has completed Harvard Law School Mediation Training; mediation and dispute resolution courses at the Justice Institute of British Columbia; advanced mediation and arbitration courses at Continuing Legal Education of BC; and BC Labour Relations Board in house dispute resolution training & workshops

Ms. Burke is also a lecturer and author on labour relations, contributing to publications for the National Academy of Arbitrators (Chicago - 2009);the University of Calgary Labour Arbitration Conference (2007); Lancaster House Labour Arbitration Conferences (2005 -2009) Lancaster Human Rights in the Workplace Conferences( 2007; 2010); Insight Western Canada Labour Relations (2008); Lancaster House Calgary Labour Arbitration & Policy conference (2008; 2011); Insight Advanced Issues in Duty to Accomodate (2005) and many presentations on Labour and Employment for the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia (1986-2005)

Ms. Burke was previously the Vice-President of the BC Council of Administrative Tribunals and the past Chair of the Policy and Research Committee. Emily was part of the initial team that developed the Foundations of Administrative Justice Course and has taught the Course both in BC and in the Yukon. She was also part of the team that adapted and taught the Foundations of Administrative Justice Course for the Benchers of the Law Society in February and March of 1998. She has also taught the adapted version of the Course to decision-makers in the University and College setting as well as those in Professional Regulatory Tribunals.
