PROFESSIONAL INFORMATION

Biographical Notes:

George was called to the bar of British Columbia in 1973 and has practiced in the labour law field for more than 30 years. He gained his initial interest and experience in the labour law field as counsel of the Ministry of Labour in 1974 and 1975 - a particularly active period of public sector labour law and policy development, including the granting of collective bargaining rights in the public service.

In 1980, after 5 years in private practice, handling labour law issues in both the public and private sector, George accepted an invitation to return to the Attorney General's Ministry. In this position, it was his responsibility to advise the most senior levels of government with regard to labour relations and employment law matters generally, including collective bargaining, as well as advice with regard to labour relations consequences of the public sector restraint initiatives taken by the government of the day.

Returning to private practice in 1984, George continued his exclusive practice in the labour law field and he appears regularly as counsel before the B.C. Labour Relations Board, the Canada Labour Relations Board, and numerous boards of arbitration. He has also been actively involved in the collective bargaining process on behalf of both employers and unions in the private and public sector. He has also established a substantial practice in the employment law field, having been involved in more than 1,000 wrongful dismissal cases. As a result of all of the above experience, George has also developed an expanding practice as a sole arbitrator and mediator.
