Biographical Notes:
In 1971, in conjunction with his partner Mr. Mendel Green QC, he co-founded the firm of Green and Spiegel. From that point in time, till he was appointed to the bench, he specialized in civil litigation of all types, but with emphasis on personal injury, insurance and professional negligence/malpractice. As counsel he appeared at every level of the judicial system in Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada and numerous administrative tribunals. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1976.
For six years he was an instructor in civil procedure in the bar admission course.
Between 1978 and 1985, he was a member of the criminal injuries compensation Board of Ontario.
In 1990, was certified as a specialist in civil litigation by the Law Society of Upper Canada.
In 1997 he was appointed a Judge of the Ontario Court, (General Division) now the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario, for the Toronto region.
As a member of the Superior Court of Justice, he participated in every aspect of the courts work but on long civil trials. He strongly advocated resolution of disputes before trial and presided over numerous settlement conferences in complex cases with a high rate of success. He authored a number of important decisions in the field of personal injury and insurance law.
Education:
Harvey Spiegel was born and raised in the city of Toronto. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He attended Osgoode Hall Law school and obtained his LLB. in 1960. As an articling student he spent his year with the legendary Malcolm Robb QC, a pre-eminent counsel at that time.
